When the Oxford Street store was undergoing restoration in 2000, the entire scaffolded facade was wrapped in a piece of art conceived and created by the British artist Sam Taylor-Wood, the frieze titled 'XV Seconds' was a massive 272m long and 18m high, considered to be the world's largest photographic artwork and was a printed screen collage of 21 popular icons. Jodie Kidd, Erin O'Connor, Ray Winstone and Elton John being among many of the icons photographed by Taylor-Wood.
We want to bring to the 20 million customers who visit Selfridges each year the
excitement of public art on a grand scale.
Nick Cross, marketing director of Selfridges (2000)
During the renovation to the world famous Liberty Store on Regent Street, London in early 2001 a giant 6m high hoarding was clad in a communication message to ensure that customers knew the store was still open, and hence a clever directional message was designed and built some 50m long with arrows pointing towards another entrance stating "During our makeover it's Liberty as usual around the corner".
